Expanding cooperation with Moscow is the main priority of the Iranian administration under President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran’s First Vice President Mohammadreza Aref stated this on September 30, as reported by IRNA.

The Iranian official made this statement during a meeting in Tehran with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. Aref addressed the issue of sanctions imposed by the West on both Russia and Iran. He emphasized that the two countries need to work together to find “ways to neutralize” these sanctions.

He also strongly advocated for the exchange of views between Moscow and Tehran on the issue of the Zangezur corridor, as well as the completion of the strategically important International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). The official stressed that any changes to the region’s borders and geopolitics would lead to further tension and abuses by external players.

The Vice President also mentioned the trade volume between Iran and Russia, which amounts to $2.5 billion, and stated that bilateral relations between the two countries should continue to develop. He also called for the finalization of a comprehensive cooperation agreement between Iran and Russia, which he believes could serve as a basis for strengthening banking relations between the two countries.
