The German government is considering reinstating conscription, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper wrote on March 12.
The article states that the Federal Government wants to strengthen Germany’s defense capability and considers the restoration of conscription as one of the options.
The Bundestag’s military commissioner Eva Högl (SPD) will present her annual report for 2023 at a press conference on Tuesday. Past reports have repeatedly criticized the inadequacy of soldiers’ equipment. Due to staff shortages in the Bundeswehr, Högl recently proposed creating a citizens’ assembly in the Bundestag to discuss new forms of public service during the year.
The resumption of conscription will also be the topic of the press conference. According to a Forsa poll, one in two people are currently in favor of reinstating compulsory military service. The poll, commissioned by Stern magazine, found that 52% favored conscription in the Bundeswehr, according to the magazine. Forty-three percent were opposed, while 5 percent hesitated.
According to the information, the strongest supporters of conscription were in the age group over 60 years old – here 59% were in favor of it. However, among young people aged 18 to 29, 59% were against conscription. Details such as the duration and structure of such service were not requested.
