The Russian Federation will take whatever measures are necessary to ensure the security of the Kaliningrad Region, Russian president’s Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Izvestiya on September 13.
This was the politician’s comment on Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski’s calls to intensify NATO military exercise near the Kaliningrad Region.
“NATO’s intention to carry out some military activity there is obvious. Therefore, we are taking appropriate measures to ensure the security of this critically important Russian region,” Peskov said.
At a forum in Kiev on September 12, Sikorski said that NATO must intensify its military exercise near the Kaliningrad Region, and he suggested that the exercise should “get aggressive” to make the Russian authorities guess what they should expect.
When asked whether NATO planned to seize this Russian semi-enclave Sikorski said it did not.
Previously, President of Russia Vladimir Putin stressed that Russia would defend the Kaliningrad Region “by all means.” Putin noted that “all the NATO member states are involved in the war against Russia” but the Russian army was the most efficient on the globe. In July, Peskov said that the Kaliningrad Region due to its unfriendly environment required a special care from the federal government.
