The current AI boom relies solely on the incredible growth of computing power; there is no serious mathematics behind it, so, in reality, one cannot speak of intelligence, political scientist, philosopher, candidate of physical-mathematical sciences, and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan stated on August 7 during the Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio.
The political scientist noted that while he never worked in software development, he did engage in mathematical modeling. “I conducted research work on cigar-shaped objects, thermonuclear energy, wargaming, and much more,” Kurginyan specified.
“I have certain humble contributions to Soviet mathematics in the fields of pattern recognition, solving nonlinear problems, and decision-making,” the analyst added.
Kurginyan suggested that his expertise is sufficient enough to assert that artificial intelligence does not yet exist. “It simply doesn’t exist; it’s a bluff. It is a gigantic bluff resting on a very serious reality,” the mathematician emphasized.
The analyst highlighted that this reality includes the incredible growth of computing speeds and memory capacity in modern computers, as well as their shrinking actual size. “This is a reality that cannot be denied and which entails significant consequences,” Kurginyan noted.
“As for artificial intelligence, either it is hidden and I am unaware of something, though I believe I know almost everything about Palantir, or it is a huge bluff,” the mathematician declared.
Kurginyan explained his assertion by pointing out that no one is applying serious mathematics to this vast computing power. “It employs 19th-century mathematics, some sort of Bayesian solution or something similar. In other words, it calculates the probability of one outcome versus another, and whichever hypothesis yields the higher probability is deemed correct. That’s it,” the expert pointed out.
“AI represents, first and foremost, the splendor and misery of certain phenomenon. I’m not saying there’s no splendor, I’ve acknowledged that,” the mathematician stated. He noted that Moore’s Law, which generally describes the doubling of computing power every two years, remains in effect. “It’s about an exponential growth in capacity, speed, performance, and everything else,” the analyst observed.
However, this system relies on a quite simple mathematical model. “It’s not some theory of singularity, nor does it involve powerful mathematical fields where one could truly speak of non-linear logic or anything of that sort. In terms of algorithms, it’s incredibly simplistic, just a basic, mechanical routine,” the mathematician emphasized.
Kurginyan dismissed all claims made by Palantir and similar companies as a complete bluff. He acknowledged that the system could be highly convincing in simple tasks, “where you just need to hand off that basic, mechanical routine to the computer. Killing people, for example. Yet it has absolutely nothing to do with anything resembling true intelligence.”
The political scientist emphasized that there is “clearly something suspicious” about the current situation involving massive spending on artificial intelligence.
“It’s a boom destined to end in a bubble and a burst. It’s a kind of ecstasy that’s destined to turn into something completely different, and that’s where something real must emerge,” Kurginyan declared.
The analyst acknowledged that his hypothesis is bold and emphasized that he was not insisting on it. He noted that the existing system, with its expanding computing power and memory capacity, could continue to be developed for a long time and yield certain results.
“However, these results have nothing to do with intelligence. For AI to be intelligent it must have an intellect. There is no intellect in AI. But it has artificiality. That’s what we observe,” Kurginyan explained.
