The unprecedented measures of support that Poland offers to Ukraine, having turned into a social constant over years, face very different attitude inside Poland itself, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, political scientist and philosopher Sergey Kurginyan said on June 26 on the Conversation with a Sage program on Radio Zvezda.
Speaking about the Order of White Eagle revoked from Zelensky, Sergey Kurginyan reminded that Poland does not live solely with one order and historical events. He urged to take a closer look at what is taking place in Poland in the context of the Ukrainian events and real politics, keeping in mind that the issue around the order is a major issue.
The political scientist indicated that Poland is now “flooded” with Ukrainians, whose number, according to unofficial reports, is 2.5 million. The population of Poland, according to Worldometer, was almost 38 million as of June 2026. Even the officially reported one million of Ukrainians is a large number for Poland.
The philosopher noted that with this number of refugees from Ukraine Poland suffers a large social burden. Firstly, it is a burden in education because the Ukrainians, according to the law, must get the same education as the Poles, and it is a burden in healthcare. Secondly, a significant number of Ukrainians inevitably affect the labor market and salaries. This effect is strongest for low-skilled workers such as cleaners. Meanwhile, the Ukrainians openly claim that they will replace the Poles at their jobs.
Thirdly, rental prices rocketed in Poland. The landlords are apparently happy with this situation, but many are not.
Also, Sergey Kurginyan reminded about the duty-free import of Ukrainian wheat to Poland to be sold in Europe, which resulted in a wheat scandal because Poland is an agricultural country.
“This is very serious in terms of elections and the support of the authorities among the population. They already blocked highways with their tractors, they disposed of wheat, and they were close to assaulting governmental buildings, and finally the Polish government allocated a huge benefit to the agricultural sector just to shut this hole with money saying, ‘Keep quiet, we will pay you so much that you will suffer no damage.’ However, it is really hard to pay them that much,” the political scientist said.
The philosopher indicated that all the factors mentioned above, which are negative for the Polish population, are aggravated by the behavior of the Ukrainians in Poland resulting in a tremendous rise in crime in the form of drunk driving and other offenses.
The leader of the Essence of Time movement, describing the attitude of the Polish authorities to the Ukrainians’ behavior, quoted some officials, “Well, this is the way these people are, they suffered great stress, and they have their own pattern of behavior, please take it delicately.”
“What does it mean delicately? They stab and beat. Tens of thousands of crimes. A huge rise in crime. The Poles have to react!” Kurginyan expressed his opinion on the situation in Poland.
The political scientist noted that all the processes in the Polish society listed above are taking place in the context of the country’s ecstatic support of Ukraine when its conflict with Russia began. This position of the Polish leadership was due to eternal Polish Russophobia and a common opinion that the Ukrainians fighting against the Russians are fighting for the Poles.
The philosopher also reminded that the Poles lost their state, then they fought for it and restored it. The Ukrainian-Polish relations will never be perfect because Poland is historical, and the Volhynian massacre (a mass murder of ethnic Polish population and, to a smaller extent, civilians of other ethnicity in the Western Ukraine and in Volhynia in March – June 1943 by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, OUN (organization banned in Russia) – Rossa Primavera News Agency) cannot be left out.
“Quite a while ago the Poles said that the level of the Polish-Ukrainian relations would depend on the level of their apologies for the massacre and on the extent to which they acknowledge their guilt. Therefore, they cannot promote the Banderite approach saying that Bandera is Ukraine’s greatest hero,” the leader of the Essence of Time movement indicated.
Thus, taking into account all the factors mentioned above, according to the political scientist, Poland objectively suffers inevitable Ukraine fatigue.
