By revoking the Order of the White Eagle from the head of the Kiev regime Vladimir Zelensky, Polish elites deliberately insult his vanity – something that, in certain instances, matters more to him than pragmatic interests, political scientist, philosopher, and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan stated on June 26 during the Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio channel.
The political scientist discussed the history of the Order of the White Eagle, noting that it is a long-standing Polish award that gained special significance during the war between Poland and Sweden. “One of the first recipients of the order was Russian Emperor Peter the Great, who in turn awarded Polish King Augustus II – who was in a very vulnerable position at the time because the Swedes were tearing Poland to pieces during the Great Northern War,” Sergey Kurginyan recalled.
After Poland lost remaining independence under Russian Tsar Nicholas I, the order served as the highest decoration in the newly established Kingdom of Poland. Following the total loss of sovereignty, the order became a high-ranking Russian imperial decoration awarded to emperors and prominent figures across various fields.
Notable recipients of the order included Alexander Menshikov, one of the chief associates of Peter the Great – Jacob Bruce, Admiral Pavel Nakhimov, and the painter Ivan Aivazovsky. The order returned to Poland when the country was restored as a sovereign state in 1923, becoming one of the nation’s premier state honors.
“It is, indeed, a symbol of Polish pride – an award of great significance to the Polish people. When they are criticized for having awarded it to Mussolini, the response is, first and foremost, that one cannot strip a deceased person of the honor. Secondly, there is the case of Gerhard Schröder, who is also the recipient of this order. Schröder is not rehabilitating the Waffen-SS, nor is he claiming that SS members are Germany’s greatest heroes. That is the counter-argument to the accusations that Ukrainians are trying to make against the Poles regarding this matter,” the leader of the Essence of Time movement explained.
He emphasized that the Order of the White Eagle is a highly significant Polish decoration. “There is a chapter that awards it, and the President heads that chapter. He does not act without consulting the chapter, and the prime minister’s confirmation is also required. Consequently, this turns out to be a more significant event than it might appear at first glance – stripping Zelensky of the order, knowing what he is,” noted Sergey Kurginyan.
The political analyst stressed that Zelensky is a man with an inflated ego, for whom an insult to that ego can matter more than major pragmatic interests.
“It is well known just how much everything there clings to trifles – on matters of ego and egocentrism – which sometimes truly take center stage. But the Poles understand this too. This means they really wanted to humiliate him, and they succeeded,” Sergey Kurginyan concluded.
