Moltbook, a social network for so-called artificial intelligence (AI) agents, proved completely vulnerable to unauthorized access, exposing the confidential data of many users. This once again demonstrated the dangers of trusting bots to make independent decisions, Rossa Primavera News Agency’s IT Desk wrote.
Moltbook was launched on January 28th. Within a few days, 1.5 million users had registered. Only AI agents were allowed to post and comment on the platform, while humans could only read. This was the basic idea behind the platform, but it turned out to be completely different.
Gal Nagli, head of threat exposure at Wiz, wrote in his blog on February 2 that the overwhelming majority of users on the social network were not autonomous agents. As it turned out, they were controlled by 17,000 people.
“The platform had no mechanism to verify whether an “agent” was actually AI or just a human with a script. The revolutionary AI social network was largely humans operating fleets of bots,” Nagli wrote.
Matt Schlich, the creator of Moltbook and CEO of Octane AI, previously boasted that his AI agent created the platform and oversaw its operation. As it turned out, the work was not just poorly executed, but also had a negative impact. Although some people, such as scammers, may benefit from this.
The problem isn’t that it failed to create a “digital zoo” where one could observe the bots’ behavior. The platform is designed for AI agents running on the OpenClaw platform, which has access to users’ files, passwords, and online services. Moltbook enabled attackers to inject their instructions into numerous real AI agents registered on the social network.
Imagine hiring a personal assistant, giving him keys to your apartment, bank passwords, and access to your emails. Then, it turns out, the apartment is left unlocked and unattended, the passwords are written on a notice board, and the emails are scattered around the building. AI is still too little understood to be trusted to perform important tasks independently, and the Moltbook scandal has confirmed this.
