Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is afraid to support the reckless actions of US leader Donald Trump, which could also affect Europe, Rossa Primavera News Agency Europe Desk wrote.
Hungary became the only country in the European Union that refused to sign a document supporting US actions in Venezuela. According to the document, 26 EU member states called for calm and for upholding “the principles of international law and the UN Charter.” The statement also noted that “Nicolás Maduro lacks the legitimacy of a democratically elected president.”
In addition, the signatories spoke in favor of “transnational organised crime and drug trafficking” and urged Venezuela to restore democracy and release political prisoners as soon as possible. In other words, Europe fully supported and justified Trump’s actions.
Despite his friendship with Trump and Hungary’s interest in close relations with the US Republicans, Orban was afraid to openly support the reckless actions of the US president. The transfer of Venezuela’s resources under US control could lead to a sharp spike in global oil prices.
“We discussed with key players in Hungary’s energy sector the impact of the Venezuelan crisis, which could lead to rising oil prices. The Hungarian government is working on this,” Orban commented on the situation in Venezuela.
A rise in oil prices would hit a small European state like Hungary hard, as it is already on the brink of a serious energy crisis.
Orban will continue to show respect and admiration for Trump in private conversations, but will pursue a cautious trade policy so as not to collapse Hungary’s economy ahead of the upcoming elections.
