Kurginyan: With the current Ukrainian elite no de-Nazification of Ukraine is possible

01.01.2026, Moscow.

As long as an anti-Russian and actually neo-Nazi consolidated elite exists and desperately evolves in Ukraine, no de-Nazification is possible, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, political scientist and philosopher Sergey Kurginyan said on December 13 on the Right to Know program on TVC.

If persecution against the Russian Orthodox Church is stopped and its rights are restored, it will be “necessary but not sufficient” for the de-Nazification of Ukraine.

“As long as this desperately anti-Russian and actually neo-Nazi – which we demonstrated in these books (the Ukrainism monograph – Rossa Primavera News Agency) consolidated elite of many hundreds of thousands of people exists, there can be no de-Nazification,” the political scientist noted.

In the formation of the Ukrainian neo-Nazi elite back in the times of the Soviet Union, a great role belonged to then-leader Nikita Khrushchev. Kurginyan reminded that we still have no answer to the question why Nikita Khrushchev released the Primate of the Greek-Catholic Church in Ukraine Josyf Slipyi.

“I would like to focus on Slipyi. I think he was a key figure,” the philosopher stressed.

Kurginyan noted that it is under Khrushchev that a major anti-clerical campaign began in the USSR, although the Russian Orthodox Church was not a political opponent anymore. This anti-clerical campaign can have no other explanation than an intention to prevent the Russian communism from gaining a metaphysical dimension thus making the USSR harder to disintegrate. An example of such fusion between communism and Catholicism is the Latin American Liberation Theology.

“Why the hell did they resume that when [Fidel] Castro said that Christianity and communism could be combined in the Liberation Theology? Why did Khrushchev do that? How large was the subversive operation? And how is it connected with Slipyi and many other things?” the political scientist asked.

According to him, for Ukraine to be de-Nazified, there must be no people like Bandera Nazis of those days and the contemporary neo-Nazis.

“Perhaps they can be violently thrown away to the West where they will continue their attempts to undermine us for centuries to come. Or perhaps there are different methods,” Kurginyan noted.

In his opinion, if this is not done, they will find a way to turn a normal Ukrainian society towards Russophobia.

“This is a tragic issue. By the way, this is an issue of a conflict between close relatives which is the more acute the closer the relatives are,” the leader of the Essence of Time movement concluded.

At the talk show, journalist Vasil Vakarov mentioned the series of films and the monograph Ukrainism by the Essence of Time movement. They tell about the Union of Brest of 1596 when the Kiev Metropolity of the Constantinople Orthodox Church declared that it joined the Greek-Catholic Church thus splitting the church into supporters and opponents of the Union.

Vakarov also reminded that in 1946 in Lvov, the Lvov Council took place where the leaders of the Greek-Catholic Church gathered in the Saint George’s Cathedral. “Their first decision was to cancel the Union of Brest. Secondly, they broke their relations with the Pope to transit into the Russian Orthodox Church. My ancestors remember this,” he noted.

Today, in many regions of Ukraine, e.g. in Lvov and Ivano-Frankovsk, there are no Orthodox churches left. “All are gone. All of them have been seized and dismantled,” the journalist stressed.
