The growing activity of the far right in Italy shows that neo-Nazism not only continues to exist but that its supporters are steadily preparing for expansion, Rossa Primavera News Agency Europe Desk wrote.
Over the past week, two incidents involving neo-fascists have occurred in Italy. First, on October 27 in Predappio, a march took place to the family crypt of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, gathering more than 1,000 participants. Although attendees were urged not to use the Nazi salute, 30 people still raised their hands during the event.
On October 31, the media published a video from the Parma office of the Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia) party — the party of the current Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni — where the youth organization National Youth (Gioventù Nazionale) also meets. The footage showed young people singing fascist songs.
The events in Italy are an alarming signal: thirty people openly performing fascist salutes at Mussolini’s crypt and young activists of the Brothers of Italy party singing fascist songs are not just isolated incidents.
It is telling that such actions are often explained today as having a “memorial character” or being due to “youthful foolishness.” Moreover, Italy’s Supreme Court has effectively legalized the public fascist salute, stipulating that it is permissible if not accompanied by direct calls to revive the regime.
When thousands gather to honor a dictator and fascist songs are sung in the offices of the ruling party, this is no longer remembrance, but ideological resuscitation.
As in many other European countries where the far right has come to power, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is also a representative of Mussolini’s heirs. Her Brothers of Italy party grew out of the Italian Social Movement, founded by Mussolini’s followers. Meloni tries to present herself as a European-style conservative, but her political views are well known, as is her direct involvement in the neo-fascist movement during her youth.
Europe pretends to have the situation under control, while in reality society is being accustomed to the reincarnation of Nazism, which will gradually come to be seen as inevitable and, therefore, will face no resistance.
