The question why the USSR suffered a devastating defeat in the cold war remains to be resolved, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, political scientist and philosopher Sergey Kurginyan wrote in his analytical essay “On the Verge of Catastrophe” published in issue 624 of the Essence of Time newspaper.
According to the political scientist, there are two social opinions regarding what caused the disintegration of the USSR. The anti-Western community, so called “traditionalists,” believes that the cold war was lost because of our credulity, the work of Western security services, and various fifth columns including a Jewish one, which this community believes to bear the largest guilt.
According to the pro-Western community (“Westernists”), we lost because of the absurd communist idea that ignored private ownership, market, and other “unconditional reasonable things rejected by the communist insanity,” Sergey Kurginyan explained.
The political scientist stressed that as long as these two competing approaches keep their focus on “certain circumstances, either made up or real, which were not a decisive factor, Russia will not escape from its current condition, which prevents it from meeting the challenges of the 21st century.”
The philosopher also noted that back in Stalin era there already was an ideological fatigue, which became tremendous after the death of Joseph Stalin, and it played a critical role in what produced the post-Soviet reality.
“Ideocracy must not have fatigue. Fatigue makes it most severely ill,” Sergey Kurginyan explained. According to him, this illness can have various forms such as philistinism, greed for profit, susceptibility to various temptations, and readiness to serve alien interests.
“However, although it is important to study the forms of this illness, it is much more important to acknowledge that this kind of illness, when it progresses, kills the state and society. Isn’t it what Shakespeare discussed in Hamlet, ‘This is the imposthume of much wealth and peace, that inward breaks, and shows no cause without why the man dies’?” the leader of the Essence of Time movement stressed.
