The potential shutdown of the Starlink satellite system in Ukraine could lead to a conflict between the USA and Poland, as the Polish government financed 20,000 terminals for Kiev’s military needs, the Spanish newspaper Mundo reported on March 6.
The publication noted that if the network ceases operation, Washington may face discontent from Polish authorities, who have signed contracts for supplying and funding the equipment. However, the article emphasizes that the USA may not view strained relations with its long-time allies as a major issue.
Earlier, media reports suggested that during negotiations over US access to Ukraine’s mineral resources, the possibility of shutting down Starlink was discussed. However, Elon Musk denied these claims. In February 2024, Polish Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski announced Poland’s plans to send Ukraine an additional 5,000 Starlink units.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov reassured that Ukraine has alternative communication methods. According to Polish sources, 25,000 Starlink terminals are currently operational in Ukraine.
However, Maria Berlinskaya, head of the Ukrainian Army’s Aero Intelligence Support Center, warned that a sudden network shutdown could create chaos within Ukraine’s armed units.
