Kremlin Press Secretary: It is premature to talk about retaining of Russian military bases in Syria

09.12.2024, Moscow.

Discussions about retaining Russian military bases in Khmeimim and Tartus in Syria are premature, stated the official representative of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov to journalists on December 9.

According to Peskov, the issue of the further stationing of Russian military contingents in Syria is a matter for discussions with those who will lead the country.

On November 29, terrorists from the ranks of the Syrian armed opposition launched a large-scale operation, advancing from the north of Idlib towards the cities of Aleppo and Hama.

Within a day, on November 30, the second-largest city in Syria, Aleppo, and its surroundings, including the international airport and the Kuweires military airbase, came under terrorist control.

This complete takeover of Aleppo by militants took place for the first time since the beginning of the crisis in Syria in 2011. Until the end of 2016, the armed opposition captured only the eastern part of the city and was later expelled by the Syrian army with the support of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

On the night of December 8, terrorists seized the Syrian capital, Damascus. According to Reuters, the country’s president, Bashar al-Assad, left Syria on an airplane.
