Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) need to be allocated as a separate branch of the Russian Armed Forces, stated retired Colonel Mikhail Khodarenok, a graduate of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, in an article published by Gazeta ru on September 22.
He noted that some military units have created UAV platoons and companies, but these units exist only on paper and do not function according to their official goals. This issue arises because, instead of qualified specialists, these units are staffed with “extras” who are not involved in UAV operations.
The expert also pointed out that drone operator units often lack the necessary equipment, and commanders send specialists to assault units to perform tasks unrelated to UAV usage.
“The names ‘platoons’ and ‘companies’ in relation to unmanned aviation seem inappropriate. In this case, there should be wings and squadrons. If the decision is made to create UAVs as a separate branch, they should presumably have their own uniforms and emblems, similar to aviation,” Khodarenok wrote.
He also highlighted the current lack of career advancement opportunities for officers leading UAV units. The highest position available is that of a UAV company commander, making this role appear dead-end and unpromising.
