Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Syria has officially started its operations in Damascus, Mehr news agency reported on September 10.
The embassy has reopened in the Syrian capital after a 13-year break. “The reopening of the Saudi embassy is an important moment in the history of relations between the two brotherly countries,” the Charge d’Affaires of the Saudi Embassy in Syria said during the inauguration ceremony of the diplomatic mission.
Riyadh’s representative noted that it will continue to develop bilateral relations between Syria and Saudi Arabia.
“The reopening of the Saudi embassy in Damascus will lead to the expansion of relations between the two countries,” the Syrian deputy foreign minister commented on the launch of the Saudi embassy.
In 2011, foreign-backed protests began in Syria against the background of the Arab Spring. Soon they turned into military confrontations.
In 2012, Saudi Arabia and many Arab League countries closed their embassies in Syria.
