What does Russia’s real asymmetric response look like? Opinion

17.04.2024, Moscow.

Russia significantly increased imports of nitrocellulose used for military purposes and produced in the West, and also mastered the production of its analogs, which can be called a real asymmetric response, according to the report from the theater of war, published in The Essence of Time newspaper, issue 581.

In late March, The Wall Street Journal wrote that Russia significantly increased its purchase of nitrocellulose produced in Germany, the United States, and Taiwan. Nitrocellulose is the main ingredient in smokeless gunpowder used in artillery ammunition.

Russia imported 70% more nitrocellulose in 2022 and almost twice as much in 2023 compared to 2021. The main “window” through which supplies are made under sanctions was a small Turkish company.

“The foresight of Russian authorities in this matter can be applauded. This is what a truly asymmetric response looks like.

In addition, Bekkhan Ozdoyev, director of the cluster of conventional weapons, ammunition, and special chemicals of Rostec State Corporation, recently reported that the Russian military-industrial complex has successfully mastered the production of wood and flax pulp.

The results of the tests are very positive: such gunpowder is not inferior to traditional gunpowder. And there has never been a shortage of wood raw materials in Russia. Rostec estimates that the share of new raw materials in gunpowder production will reach 60-70%.

But this, of course, does not mean that Russia should stop buying nitrocellulose on the world market,” The Essence of Time editorial reads.
