Sevastopol governor tells about one of the participants of uprising in Buchenwald

About 150 people – former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps – now live in Sevastopol. The governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhayev reminded about the International Day of Liberation of Prisoners of Nazi Concentration Camps on April 11 on his Telegram channel.

“Today is the International Day of liberation of prisoners of Nazi concentration camps,” he wrote.

On April 11, 1945, prisoners of the Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald revolted, seized the camp and held it until the arrival of Allied troops.

“One of the uprising participants was a defender of Sevastopol, commander of the searchlight company of the 61st anti-aircraft artillery regiment of the Black Sea Fleet air defense, senior lieutenant Dmitry Yakovlevich Fyodorov. When the defense of Sevastopol was coming to an end, he was on Cape Chersonese and, being seriously wounded, was captured. He was taken to Germany and imprisoned in Buchenwald. There he became the commander of a branch of the Russian underground center,” the governor of Sevastopol wrote.

As Fyodorov later recalled, the prisoners of Buchenwald decided to revolt after learning that the Nazis had decided to destroy the camp. The defense began on the afternoon of April 11 and lasted until April 14. During these days 800 Nazis were taken prisoner. In the end, the prisoners of Buchenwald were liberated.

According to Razvozhayev, there are still no exact figures of the number of people who passed through the Nazi “death camps”, historians claim that there were more than 20 million prisoners.

The total death toll in concentration camps is about 12 million, of which 5 million people were citizens of the Soviet Union, wrote the governor of Sevastopol. At the same time, every fifth prisoner of concentration camps was a child.

“In Sevastopol, there are few of them left — about 150 people. Cherishing the memory of these events of the Great Patriotic War is a sacred duty for all of us,” Razvozhayev emphasized.
