Kurginyan: Civil society, as the basis for democracy, has been destroyed

06.04.2024, Aleksandrovskoye.

Civil society, with its virtues and at least declared principles, has been destroyed in the West, said political scientist, philosopher, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on March 22 on the Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio channel.

Speaking about the political transformation that took place in the West, Kurginyan recalled that democracy is impossible without civil society.

The citizen is the subject of this very democracy, that is, a person who is fully oriented in the political landscape, has his own stable values and views, and meaningfully expresses sympathy and antipathy towards certain institutions in an appropriate way, the political scientist recalled. Also, a citizen and society have the right to rebel when their “fundamental right to choose is questioned.

Today in the West such terms as “individualistic society, consumer society, amorphous society are introduced to describe its current state, noted the analyst. The very existence of society was never in doubt in the past, while, now, it is becoming problematic.

So, if there is no citizen, but there is a consumer, then what is classical democracy? I mean classical bourgeois democracy in the form that has been established in the West,” Kurginyan explained.

In order for a new Franklin Delano Roosevelt to emerge in the US, you need a kind of a citizen who considers the US to be his or her home, who holds personal responsibility for it, participates in establishing law and order, and debates its structure.

The citizen “was destroyed along with all the classical virtues or at least the declared principles,” noted Kurginyan, recalling that the declaration in itself is also important, even if “it is not directly implemented in reality, but something about it still remains.
