Cancer diseases and related mortality in Serbia rise after NATO aggression against Yugoslavia, Serbian Health Minister Danica Grujičić said, RIA Novosti informed on March 27.

“We and our neighbors, the Croats and Hungarians, have been alternating for years in first place in cancer mortality in Europe,” Grujičić stated.

She specified that according to the European Cancer Information System (ECIS), in 2020, Serbia was in first place in the world in cancer with an index of 150.6 per 100,000 people. At the same time, the average index in Europe is 108.7 points.

According to Grujičić, the leading causes of cancer mortality in Serbia are tumors of the respiratory system, breast, central nervous system organs, thyroid gland, blood and digestive systems. About 40 thousand cancer cases are detected in Serbia every year.

Grujičić is a renowned neurosurgeon and a specialist in oncology. She is a professor and before being appointed Minister of Health, she headed the Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia.

On March 24, 1999, NATO began bombing Yugoslavia, which lasted 78 days. Depleted uranium munitions were used, which led to radioactive contamination of the area and an increase in the incidence of cancer.

NATO carried out the military operation without the approval of the UN Security Council. It killed more than 2,500 people, including 87 children.
