Transnistria turns to Russia for help due to economic blockade

28.02.2024, Tiraspol.

The appeal to Russia for help from Transnistrian MPs is caused by the economic blockade of Moldova, local TV channel TVS Transnistria informed on February 28.

“It was decided to address the Federation Council and the State Duma of Russia with a request to implement measures to protect Transnistria in conditions of increased pressure from Moldova, taking into account the fact of permanent residence in Transnistria of more than 220 thousand Russian citizens and the unique positive experience of Russian peacekeeping on the Dnestr, as well as the status of guarantor and mediator in the negotiation process,” the MPs’ resolution reads.

Separately, Transnistrian MPs sent an appeal to the UN Secretary General on protecting international norms. The MPs called on the UN to stop Moldovan attempts to violate the rights and freedoms of Transnistrian citizens. The deputies asked the UN not to allow provocative actions on the part of Moldova, which would cause an escalation of tension.

Corresponding appeals were also sent to the OSCE, the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States member states, the EU Parliament, and the International Red Cross.

On February 28, a meeting of the Transnistrian MPs took place in Tiraspol, which gathered 650 delegates and addressed the issue of countering the economic blockade by Moldova.
