The record for the cargo transported along the Northern Sea Route is set for 2023, said Aleksey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation, in an interview with Expert on February 19.

He noted that 36.25 million tons of cargo were transported along the Northern Sea Route in 2023, which was a historical record. The transportation volume at the end of last year exceeded the planned indicators by 250 thousand tons. Transit traffic accounted for 2.15 million tons.

Likhachev spoke about successes in the development of the icebreaker and Arctic cargo fleet, which makes it possible to ensure continuous navigation along the Northern Sea Route. In 2020, the icebreaker Arktika, which became the first vessel of Project 22220, joined Atomflot. Serial icebreakers of new generations Sibir and Ural were also delivered. The head of Rosatom added that the icebreakers Chukotka and Yakutia and the world’s most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker Russia are under construction.
