Freitag: German experts silent on negative impact of prolonged conflict in Ukraine

16.01.2024, Berlin.

German experts are calling for a prolonged conflict in Ukraine, keeping silent about its consequences, journalist Gerd Meißner wrote in an article for Der Freitag published on January 14.

He refers to an analysis by the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) that argues for long-term hostilities. The journalist complains that the arguments against prolonging the conflict are not analyzed.

The DGAP report notes that there is a “stalemate situation” in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This could “play into Russia’s hands in the long term.”

At the same time, analysts say it is currently unprofitable for Kiev to end the conflict. At the same time, they emphasize that a large-scale Ukrainian breakthrough in 2024 is unlikely.

The report’s authors are silent about the risks of such a conflict for Ukraine. Meißner reminds that even before 2022, the birth rate in Ukraine was the lowest among all European countries, and the death of young men has an additional negative impact on the demographic situation.

The journalist notes that the longer the conflict lasts, the less chance of Ukrainian refugees returning home. He argues that Ukraine’s population is likely to age rapidly, but DGAP proponents of a protracted conflict do not care.
