US uses UN Security Council resolution to justify aggression in Red Sea

The United States is using its position in the UN Security Council on the Red Sea as a pretext to justify aggression, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on January 12.

“As we warned, the Anglo-Saxons are trying to use UN Security Council Resolution 2722, adopted the day before under the pretext of ensuring the safety of navigation in the Red Sea, to justify their aggression,” Zakharova said.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman emphasized that Russia condemns the actions of the USA and its allies to escalate tensions in the region. She noted that this could interrupt the positive trends emerging in settling the Yemeni problem.

On behalf of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Zakharova called on the international community to strongly condemn the attack on Yemen, which was undertaken by a group of countries without a UN mandate.

On January 11, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution condemning the Yemeni Houthis’ attacks on ships in the Red Sea and demanding an end to such attacks.

On the morning of January 12, the United States and Britain launched massive air and missile strikes on the facilities of the Houthis in Yemen. The cities of Sana’a, Hodeidah, Saada, Jamar, and Taiz were attacked.

Russia requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the US and UK attack on Yemen.
