Zelensky calls for Russia’s expulsion from the UN Security Council

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky demanded the expulsion of Russia from the UN Security Council on the eve of his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York, the news service of German TV channel ARD Tagesschau informed on September 19.

Zelensky also criticized the UN for the fact that the Russian representation in the organization continues to work despite the ongoing armed conflict, the TV channel said.

Russia is a permanent member of the UN and has the right to veto in the organization.

In addition to Zelensky, US President Joe Biden, Turkish President Recep Erdogan and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are also expected to speak at the meeting.

Zelensky will address the UN General Assembly for the first time since the start of the special operation in Ukraine. Russia will be represented at the event by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The minister is expected to speak on September 23.

Earlier, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that the upcoming UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting on Ukraine with the participation of Vladimir Zelensky would be pointless. According to the Russian representative, this event is organized for one person – Zelensky.
