French senators state failure of Macron’s policy in Africa

08.08.2023, Paris.

94 French senators signed an open letter to French President Emmanuel Macron about the failure of France’s national policy in Africa, Le Figaro newspaper wrote on August 8.

“Today Niger, yesterday Mali, Central African Republic, Burkina Faso rejected France, French forces, French enterprises… The continent no longer understands France and is increasingly challenging its role,” the newspaper quoted the letter as saying.

The politicians noted the failure of Operation Barkhane after which African leaders willingly established contacts with PMC Wagner. They recalled that anti-French protests are already taking place even in such countries close to France as Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal.

“Today, yesterday’s French Africa is turning into a militarily Russian Africa, economically Chinese Africa and diplomatically US Africa,” the senators presented in the letter their vision of the situation.

Among the politicians who signed the letter are Bruno Retailleau, president of The Republicans group
in the Senate (upper house of the French parliament), and Christian Cambon, chairman of the Senate Commission on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Armed Forces.

The head of the republic’s defense ministry has already reacted to the words about the failure. He said that the operation should not be evaluated in such a way
