The United States engaged subsidiaries of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to grow insects capable of spreading infections, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, Chief of the Russian NBC Protection Troops, told a briefing on July 18.
“We have already noted that such research is being carried out in specialised organisations, both within the United States and in biolaboratories located overseas, where more than 100 species of mosquitoes and ticks are being studied together. Dual-use production facilities, such as Oxitec biotechnology company, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, could be used to mass-produce vectors,” Kirillov noted.
According to him, scientific institutes and laboratories affiliated with the Pentagon are actively researching mosquitoes and ticks that can be vectors of infections that can provoke epidemics, specifically Rift Valley fever, West Nile fever and Dengue fever.
