Germany advocates for EU sanctions against Rosatom

15.04.2023, Berlin.

The Russian nuclear industry should be included in the following package of EU anti-Russian sanctions, German Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck said on April 15, Deutsche Presse-Agentur informs.

“The federal government has appealed to the European Commission to include the civilian nuclear sector,” Habeck said.

He said that these anti-Russian measures might be included in the next sanctions package. The German politician stressed that sanctions against the nuclear industry would deal a very sensitive blow to Russia.

The Hungarian authorities constantly oppose sanctions against Rosatom because the Russian state company is building two new power units at the Paks-2 nuclear power plant in the country.

At the same time, Finland suspended the construction of the Hanhikivi-1 nuclear power plant in the spring of 2022, which was also performed by Rosatom. In addition, the customer of the project – the company Fennovoima – intends to sue Rosatom for €2 billion.
