Pro-Russian rally in Berlin causes a wave of criticism against its organizers

01.03.2023, Berlin

Many German politicians strongly criticized the organizers of the rally against arms supplies to Ukraine in Berlin, the German newspaper Die Welt wrote on February 27.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the head of the Bundestag Defense Committee, accused the organizers of an alliance with leftist and right-wing radicals. “It is not the demonstration itself that has become a problem … What is worrying is that the organizers are joining forces with right-wing and left-wing radicals and styling the victim as a criminal,” she said.

In addition, Strack-Zimmerman accused Sarah Wagenknecht, one of the organizers of the rally, of being cynical and using the language of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Criticism also came from her fellow party members from The Left Party.

For example, Katina Schubert, deputy chairwoman of the Left Party, accused Wagenknecht of lacking solidarity with Ukraine and of trying to go against the political trend. “Whoever initiates a cross-frontal appeal gets a cross-frontal response,” Schubert said.

On February 25, 2023, a rally was held in Berlin near the Brandenburg Gate against arms supplies to Ukraine. According to the police about 13,000 people came to the protest, according to the organizers there were more than 50,000 participants.

According to German media reports, the demonstration was attended by representatives of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, as well as members of far-right movements.

The demonstration was organized by Bundestag member Sarah Wagenknecht and human rights activist Alice Schwarzer. The goal of the demonstration was to urge the German authorities to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine and initiate a diplomatic dialogue with Moscow to reduce escalation.

Editorial comment

The reaction of German politicians to the demonstration against arms deliveries to Ukraine is indicative. Anyone who opposes the general line set by the US is immediately marginalized.

Before the rally in Berlin, Sarah Wagenknecht criticized the German authorities regarding arms deliveries to Kiev, but that was only one voice among many, which is rather easily drowned out in the mass media. A demonstration of many thousands is another matter that cannot be ignored.

This is why the ultra-right-wing activists, who compromise with their presence all mass actions that are inconvenient for the authorities, come into play. This is exactly how the German establishment fought the Querdenker movement, which opposed forced coronavirus vaccination and quarantine.

Given that Sarah Wagenknecht’s party has long wanted to strip her of her party card, the Left Party now has a formal reason for this, which it will certainly use. This is the “democratic” way of dealing with the undesirable in Germany.
