Orban: Because of the conflict in Ukraine, Europe has lost its independence in a year

23.02.2023, Budapest

Europe has lost its independence, economic and military power in less than a year because of the conflict in Ukraine, said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Magyar Nemzet reported on February 23.

He said that EU countries sent a significant part of their weapons to Kiev and were unable to replenish them with any reserves.

In addition, according to Orban, Europe has weakened over the past year because of US President Joe Biden’s active assertion of his interests in Brussels “to the detriment of European interests.”

The consequences of the EU sanctions against Russia began to weaken the European economy, but did not affect the “cheap gas-rich” USA at all. According to the Hungarian prime minister, the EU economy is being destroyed by a “tsunami of sanctions,” while the US remains unaffected by this disaster.

Orban specified that the Hungarian government had already discussed Hungary’s attitude to the conflict in Ukraine. The government has decided to be guided solely by its own security interests. “We will not supply weapons, we will not join any military coalition,” he said.

The Hungarian prime minister believes that there can be no winners in the conflict in Ukraine, “Russia cannot win because the entire Western world supports Ukraine. And Russia is a nuclear power, and a nuclear power cannot be cornered because it can start a nuclear war.”

Hungary took a neutral position in the situation around Ukraine. In the summer of 2022, Hungary blocked for several weeks in the EU the adoption of the embargo on Russian oil. Thus, the country achieved concessions, it is allowed to buy Russian oil until 2024.
