The Western policy of turning Ukraine into an anti-Russian springboard has reached the point of no return, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said speaking before the Russian State Duma on February 15.
Part of the West’s current course is a long-term strategy to contain Russia. It includes NATO’s eastward expansion and “turning fraternal Ukraine into an anti-Russia, a Russophobic military bridgehead,” Lavrov said.
In recent years, this strategy of the United States and its European allies has reached “the point of no return,” the minister stressed. Moscow has long been under no illusions about the real motives of the West.
The diplomat says that Russia remembers how the West failed to comply with its obligations on NATO’s expansion, which it gave to the USSR. Furthermore, Moscow has not forgotten how Germany, France and Poland refused to sign the agreement between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich and the Ukrainian opposition.
By doing so, these countries “actually sanctioned the bloody coup d’etat in Kiev in February 2014 under openly Nazi, racist slogans,” Lavrov stressed.
