La Jornada: Mexico needs to shift to BRICS

15.02.2023, Mexico City.

Mexico should not deteriorate relations with the USA, but should seek to do business with all countries on an equal footing, including Germany, China and Russia, La Jornada expert Jose Blanco wrote on February 14.

He noted that already both parties in the USA, which has declared China a systemic enemy, have taken the position of returning production facilities to their territory. In his view, Germany, blackmailed by the Americans, nevertheless does not want to radically revise its relations with China just because China has not condemned Russia in the conflict in Ukraine.

Blanco noted that the USA is now ready for anything to maintain itself as the world government “that nobody chose,” and with the American way of life having reached a state of decay.

“In this situation, Mexico acts with ambiguous caution. The government has always jealously defended the foundations on which the country acts internationally (…). Mexico, like others, needs to develop its economic relations, especially with emerging powers, but we seem to be bound by integration and Mexico’s dependence on the United States,” he said.

He stressed that Mexico needs to start distancing itself clearly and gently. According to him, it is clear that the world does not belong to the USA, and nothing has happened to change the obvious trend that the USA will gradually be displaced by China as the leading world power.

Blanco believes that Mexico, like the rest of the world, should be interested in the Latin American goals of the Commonwealth of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and cooperate thoroughly with the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa). In his view, the future of the world economy is determined by this space.
