LNG from the USA costs Italy four to five times more than pipeline gas from Russia, said Russian Ambassador to Italy Sergey Razov, RIA Novosti reported on February 9.
He recalled that in 2021 Russia exported to Italy more than 30 billion cubic meters of gas, which is about 40% of the country’s consumption. “There were no doubts about the reliability and economic profitability of such supplies,” the diplomat stressed.
Razov reminded that in 2022, Rome sharply, more than halved, supplies from Russia as part of the sanctions. To compensate for these actions, Italy increased imports from Algeria, Azerbaijan and other countries.
Gas tariffs for businesses and private users had to be increased. “The country was on the verge of an energy crisis,” the diplomat stressed.
He noted that LNG from the USA is 4-5 times more expensive than pipeline gas from Russia.
