31.01.2023, Athens.

Greece will not supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on January 31 during his visit to Japan, the Greek public broadcaster ERT reported from Tokyo.

“We have given substantial military support to Ukraine, such as armored infantry vehicles, but we will not give Leopard 2 tanks for the simple reason that they are absolutely necessary for our defense strategy,” Mitsotakis said.

Mitsotakis stressed that Greece supports Ukraine with arms delieveries, but will not do so at the expense of its defense capabilities.

EU countries send tanks to Ukraine in the form of military aid. Greece was almost the first to send to Ukraine via Poland 40 tons of military equipment on two C-130 planes, as well as new shipments of weapons and military equipment.

At the same time, Greece will send to Ukraine 40 armored infantry vehicles of the BMP-1 type made in East Germany. In return, Germany will give Greece 40 German-made Marder armored vehicles.
