Tchaikovsky’s ballet will not be cancelled in Sweden because of Kiev protests

15.12.2022, Malmö.

The Malmö Opera House sees no reason to cancel Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet “The Nutcracker” on New Year’s Eve, the theatre’s press manager Torgny Nilsson told Swedish Radio.

“It would be strange to boycott a Russian composer who died more than a hundred years ago because of today’s conflict,” Nilsson said.

He stressed that the decision to stage the production was made three years ago, when the special operation had not yet begun. At the same time, the press manager admitted that the theatre could change the decision now.

Minister of Culture and Information Policy Aleksandr Tkachenko earlier called on the West to boycott Russian culture, speaking about the “civilization battle” which Kiev is waging.
