Russian President Vladimir Putin called the opening of the Saur-Mogila memorial in the DPR after its restoration a great and momentous event. The president said this in his address to the attendees of the opening ceremony of the memorial complex on September 8.

Putin stressed that the Saur-Mogila, along with the Mamaev Kurgan and Sapun Mountain, is a great shrine, for which our ancestors shed blood.

The president recalled that in 2014 the Ukrainian neo-Nazis unleashed a war in the region and in the course of hostilities the memorial was practically destroyed. At the same time, the militia of Donbass recaptured this height, repeating the feat of the ancestors, Putin said.

He added that those who demolish monuments today are mocking history and betraying their own fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers. Russia will never be able to “understand and accept” this, the president added.
