09.06.2022, Donetsk.

A group of specialists from the military construction complex of the Russian Defense Ministry together with experts has begun restoring the Saur-Mogila memorial complex, Deputy Chairman of the DPR Government Vladimir Antonov said on June 8, the Donetsk News Agency (DAN) reported.

Antonov said that participants in the project to revive the memorial have decided “to fully restore the memorial while preserving its original appearance as far as possible.” He told that the work on the restoration of the memorial will pass in several stages. First of all the specialists began to restore different bas-reliefs of the memorial complex.

It is assumed that by September 8, when Donbass Liberation Day will be celebrated, a significant part of the work will be done. By the end of the year it is planned to complete the restoration of the central avenue of the complex and its side pylons. Three bas-reliefs will be added on the left side, commemorating the exploits of the modern liberators of Donbass. In the future, a figure of a Soviet soldier will be restored at the very top of the memorial, and an eternal flame will be lit.

Great assistance in the restoration of the memorial complex is provided by the Russian Military Historical Society (RVIO). RVIO Deputy Chairman Nikolai Ovsiyenko visited the DPR and inspected the progress of restoration of the Saur-Mogila memorial.

The Saur-Mogila kurgan is located in the eastern Donetsk People’s Republic. The height of the kurgan above sea level is 277.9 meters. This kurgan became one of the main symbols of the defeat of German fascists in the Donetsk region during the Great Patriotic War. In 1967 a large memorial complex was erected on it that included an obelisk 36 meters high and a sculpture of a Soviet soldier at the foot of the obelisk. An eternal flame was lit at the foot of the obelisk in memory of soldiers who died in the strategic height assault.

In the summer of 2014, the kurgan became the site of fierce combat between the DPR People’s Militia and the Ukrainian army. The People’s Militia defended the hill and its retention became one of the turning points in the war in Donbass. In the battles of 2014, the memorial suffered severe damage.
