Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia said on 19 May that grain from Ukraine was going not to famine-stricken countries, but to European granaries.
The Russian diplomat expressed suspicion that the grain, which is exported from Ukraine to Europe by rail and barges along the Danube River, is sent not to poor countries, but to European granaries.
“We have a justified suspicion that this grain is not going to the needs of the hungry global south, but is being pumped into the granaries of European countries. This, as we understand it, is how Ukraine pays for the arms supplied by the West,” Vasily Nebenzia said.
Ukraine is one of the largest suppliers of grain in the world. Earlier, the UN said that without cheap Ukrainian grain, many countries in Africa and South Asia might face famine.
