Militants at Azovstal demand food in exchange for hostages

05.05.2022, Mariupol.

The neo-Nazis in the basements of Azovstal demanded food and medicine as a precondition for the release of Ukrainian civilians they are holding hostage, RIA Novosti reported on May 5, according to a representative of the headquarters of the operation to free the enterprise.

According to the representative of the headquarters, the militants demanded a ton of food in exchange for 15 hostages and said that they would not release anyone, but only exchange them.

Earlier, the civilians released by the Ukrainian Nazis told about the shortage of food at Azovstal and that they had been fed once a day for a week, so presumably the neo-Nazis were indeed running out of food.

Azovstal is the last facility in Mariupol not yet mopped up from neo-Nazis. Up to several thousand militants could presumably be in the basements of the plant.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered that plans to quickly sweep the plant’s underground from the militants be put on hold to avoid casualties by Russian servicemen; instead, the militants were blocked in the territory of the plant and offered to surrender.

While the militants were still in control of the surface of the plant’s territory, the Ukrainian side attempted to evacuate someone by helicopter at least three times.
