The positions of Senior Lieutenant Ilya Sapegin’s motorized infantry platoon became an unconquerable frontier for the Ukrainian nationalists. The professionalism and courage of the Russian soldiers and their commander made it possible to prevent an enemy counterattack in a strategically important sector of the front, the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry reported on May 3.
According to the report, Senior Lieutenant Sapegin and his platoon were tasked to block a Ukrainian radical formation in one of the towns in order to prevent a counterattack.
Having assessed the situation, Ilya Sapegin competently organized positions in the area of responsibility, which allowed the senior lieutenant’s platoon to confidently repel continuous attacks by superior enemy forces trying to break out from encirclement. Ukrainian radicals, among other things, used dense mortar fire against Russian soldiers.
In addition, the main Ukrainian nationalist forces fiercely attacked the Russian troops to save their units from the Russian defensive encirclement and to deliver ammunition and food to them. Their attack also targeted the positions of Ilya Sapegin’s platoon.
Despite the superior enemy forces, the heroic motorized infantry subjected to mortar fire successfully repulsed all attacks by the Ukrainian nationalists. During the combat, Ilya Sapegin personally destroyed the enemy’s ATGM crew with targeted fire. The professionalism, courage, and bravery of the Russian soldiers made it possible to successfully accomplish the tasks set by the command.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a special military operation to protect Donbass in response to a request for assistance from the heads of the LPR and DPR. The goal of the operation is the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. At the same time, the Russian leader stressed that there was no question of military occupation of Ukraine. The Russian military department also reported that Russian troops do not strike peaceful cities.
