Russian diplomat talks about the resonance at the UN caused by the story of grandmother with the USSR flag

The video footage of the grandmother walking out to the Ukrainian nationalists with the Red Banner caused a resonance in the UN, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy said on April 19 on the TV channel Solovyov Live.

“Many people were interested, colleagues on the sidelines asked and called afterwards asking who this grandmother was. I sent a video and explained them. This story really resonated here, and I’m very glad that it resonated at home, too,” he said.

Polansky said there was no way he couldn’t share the story of the video.

“I think she accomplished a feat because anything could have happened to her. She came out with the banner, she didn’t cajole, she could have probably, if she wanted to or if she was scared, pretend that this was a play. But she did not, she continued to promote what she believes in, she really gave an assessment, she did not take the food, she asked for the return of the banner,” the Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN said.

Polyansky noted that he would continue to present such stories at the UN.

“It resonated, we will continue giving such examples,” he pointed out.

Earlier, during a meeting of the UN Security Council, Polyansky spoke about the video that has gained wide popularity on the Internet.

In the video, an elderly woman with a flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), also known as the Victory Banner in modern Russia, comes out to meet soldiers of the Ukrainian army, mistaking them for Russian military.

The Ukrainian army’s representative hands the grandmother a bag of groceries and takes away and tramples on the flag. Then the elderly woman returns the food and demands to return the flag for which her parents fought.
