Russian Defense Ministry confirms the information about the surrender of Ukrainian Marines

13.04.2022, Moscow.

The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense Major General Igor Konashenkov confirmed at a briefing for journalists on April 13 that more than a thousand Ukrainian marines surrendered.

“In the city of Mariupol, near the Illich Iron and Steel Works, as a result of a successful offensive by Russian Armed Forces and militia units of the Donetsk People’s Republic, 1,026 Ukrainian servicemen of the 36th Marine Brigade voluntarily laid down their weapons and surrendered,” he told the journalist.

According to the data presented, 162 officers are among those who surrendered. Konashenkov noted that 151 wounded among the surrendered were provided with primary medical care. They have now been sent to a city hospital in Mariupol.

Thus, the operation to liberate Mariupol is coming to its end. Most of the city’s territory has already been mopped up from Ukrainian fighters and nationalist formations. On the previous day, the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic Denis Pushylin announced that the city’s seaport had been taken under control. Now only the territory of the Azovstal plant, occupied by Ukrainian nationalists, remains to be liberated.
