Residents of Athens hold a spontaneous rally at the monument to Soviet soldiers

Athens residents came to a spontaneous rally at the monument to Soviet soldiers who fell for the freedom and independence of Greece, desecrated by unknown persons the day before, RIA Novosti reported on March 20.

About 100-120 people came out for a spontaneous rally, including Russians, Greeks and Ukrainians. Representatives of the Greek Communist Party also joined the rally. All were convinced that neo-Nazis were involved in the vandalism.

“We could not remain indifferent to what happened. We couldn’t stay home. The same inscriptions had been placed on the monument to the Greek Pontians, the victims of the genocide, here near Kallithea. It too had been cleaned. It was obviously done by the same people,” one of the protesters said.

On March 20, several dozens of Athens residents brought flowers, St. George ribbons and Russian flags to the rally. They put up a banner reading “No to imperialistic war. Stop Greece being dragged into the war”.

Recall that a monument depicting a fallen Soviet soldier and his mourning mother was established in Athens on Syngrou Avenue in 2005. It was dedicated to the Soviet soldiers and officers who escaped from Nazi captivity and fought among the Greek partisans during World War II.

On March 19, unknown persons covered the monument with yellow paint and wrote on it the word “Azov” (organization banned in Russia) and drew a symbol of the Nazi Ukrainian battalion. On the same day, in the evening, several people cleaned the monument and suggested on social networks to gather near the monument and lay flowers in memory of the fighters against fascism.
