US sanctions were to deal a powerful blow to Russia, depriving it not just of economic stability, but forcing it to crawl on its knees to the “rulers of the world” in the USA. That must have been what the US government thought. But the current situation is far from this.
Russia exports over $2.3 trillion worth of oil and oil products to India per year (data for 2021).
Petroleum products account for a quarter of all exports from Russia to India. And, presumably, India cannot and will not want to give up such arrangements with Russia.
We must not forget about S-400, which India is happy to buy from Russia, despite threats of sanctions against them from the United States.
But the USA is not giving up and is hitting from different angles – for example, they thought that cutting us off from SWIFT would prevent transactions with other countries from taking place. Indeed, many deals between India and Russia are in limbo, but this is not the case with oil.
Russia and India immediately began to agree on a new rupee-ruble payment system. India is already preparing a certain system for this; so far it has not named the bank that will service such an arrangement, but the process is, one might say, in its final stages.
There is more to come. Russia has offered India to buy oil from it at a special discounted price. The offer is more than tempting. After all, the price of fuel in India has been rising steadily since 2017. And India has an agricultural season ahead of it.
The authorities only reassured the protesting farmers, they don’t need another riot over high fuel prices.

Jen Psaki said at a briefing that the US message to any country is to abide by the sanctions that the USA had imposed and recommended. Countries that have trade and economic ties with Russia should also be concerned about their reputations, she added.
The US recommends that everyone follow it; you don’t have to take into account the economic and social conditions in each country. Just do as the hegemon says, or you will regret it.
India has not come out in support of Russia, but it has not come out “against” it either. She follows her country’s interests, and right now oil is in its interests.
So it is logical that it wanted to import 15 million barrels of oil from Russia at a special price.
