Cuba at UN emergency meeting rejects US hypocrisy over Ukraine crisis

02.03.2022, New York.

The hypocrisy and double standards of the United States and NATO in connection with their response to Russia’s special operation in Ukraine was rejected by Cuba’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso, in his speech at an emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly, Prensa Latina reported March 1.

The Cuban representative recalled how, in 1999, Washington and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) bombed Yugoslavia for their geopolitical purposes, causing great losses among civilians.

The United States and some of its allies use force, invade sovereign states to provoke regime change, interfere in the internal affairs of other countries and are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians, which they call “collateral damage,” the Cuban diplomat pointed out.

Regarding the Ukrainian crisis, the Cuban representative said a thorough assessment of the factors that led to the use of force was needed. According to him, the US has for years taken action to expand NATO to Russia’s borders. All this time they ignored Moscow’s quite reasonable demands for security guarantees. The representative of Cuba called it a mistake, which led to a scenario with consequences of unpredictable scale, but this could have been avoided.

The diplomat said Cuba favors “a serious, constructive and realistic diplomatic solution to the current crisis in Europe” that guarantees security and sovereignty for all countries as well as regional and international peace and stability.

According to him, Cuba welcomes the start of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine because this is the only way to resolve the conflict.
