Russian Federation Council Speaker talks about Ukraine's military scenario for the seizure of Donbass

27.12.2021, Moscow.

Ukraine may have been preparing a military scenario for the seizure of the territories of Donbass, which are not under its control, in 2021, Russia Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said during a press conference on December 27 closing the fall session.

“It is possible that such a scenario of a military attack on Lugansk and Donetsk was being prepared,” Matviyenko said. She recalled numerous reports in the Ukrainian media that Russia was allegedly going to attack Ukraine. According to the politician, this “powerful information attack” should have prepared the world community [for the attack of Ukraine on Donbass].

Matviyenko suggested that Ukraine had prepared a military scenario for the seizure of Donetsk and Lugansk – “a third attempt to destroy people by force, to regain territory.” According to the chairman of the Federation Council, this scenario is similar to Georgia’s attack on South Ossetia in 2008.

Former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili ordered the military to attack the citizens of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in 2008 because he received approval from above, Matviyenko explained. She pointed out that at that time the information field was also “tuned to the fact that Russia attacked Georgia.” In early 2021, Ukraine amassed a significant part of its armed forces on the border with the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. The official Kremlin warned Kiev that military actions against the residents of eastern Ukraine could end in the loss of statehood for Ukraine.
