Should the Ukrainian authorities expect international tribunal? Opinion

22.12.2021, Moscow.

The statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin about the features of genocide in the events in Donbass may be the prologue to an international tribunal for the Ukrainian authorities, the Essence of Time editorial reads.

This is quite a strong statement. If the fact of genocide is officially recognized by the UN, the Ukrainian authorities will face an international tribunal. There is only a “small matter” left – such recognition by the UN.

On December 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of the Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights that the events in Donbass resembled genocide.

Putin called Russophobia the first step towards genocide. The head of state said that “we need to act very carefully here so as not to devalue these concepts.” However, according to him, these concepts should reflect the realities of current events.

On December 10, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg refused to fulfill Russia’s demand to formally refute the prospect of Ukraine and Georgia joining the North Atlantic Alliance.

A few hours earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry demanded that the alliance “officially disavow the decision of the 2008 Bucharest summit of NATO” on the possibility of future membership of Ukraine and Georgia. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, such a step would correspond to “the fundamental interests of European security” because the prospect of Kiev and Tbilisi joining the alliance ran counter to the commitment of the OSCE leaders “not to strengthen their security at the expense of the security of others.”
