Kurginyan names the reasons for the collapse of the USSR

The late Soviet Union was corrupt with philistinism and elite’s desire to integrate into the West, said analyst, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on December 8 in the Obyektivno program on the Belarusian ONT channel.

One reason why the Soviet Union collapsed was the fact that the Soviet society had become philistine, Kurginyan noted. The Soviet project was transformed into “goulash communism”. “But goulash communism is nonviable. Communism is viable, but goulash communism is not,” the political scientist stressed.

“On the other hand, our elite’s desperate will, first, for enrichment, and second, for integration into the West. The third factor was the ideological striving for integration itself,” Kurginyan said.

An important factor of the collapse, the political scientist believes, was the West’s efforts to destroy its geopolitical competitor.

However, Kurginyan stressed that even in late 1980s the transformation into a philistine society and West-centric utopias had not become irreversible. “But what began in 1990 required either quite a serious effort to stop the destructive processes that escalated tremendously, or these processes would win,” the political scientist said.

“Something can be done at any step of any initiative’s development or degradation. But the problem is that the farther the destructive process goes, the more willpower is required to stop it, while the willpower decreases,” Kurginyan stressed.

December 8 is the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Belavezhye Accords which de facto destroyed the Soviet Union.
