Russian State Duma Speaker: Disintegration of the USSR was in the interests of the Soviet elite, USA and Europe

08.12.2021, Moscow.

The Soviet elite, the United States, and Europe benefited from the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin wrote on December 8 on his Telegram channel.

“The former Soviet elite benefited economically and politically from the collapse of the USSR,” he wrote. “The USA and Europe eliminated a strong ideological opponent by dividing it into separate countries.”

“None of the 15 states that were part of the Union benefited from its collapse. To this day each of them faces the consequences of this tragedy,” stressed the head of the lower house of the Russian parliament.

The politician noted that as a result of the severance of economic and production ties, industrial potential was lost, which led to a systemic crisis, “to a catastrophe from which the citizens of the Soviet Union suffered first and foremost,” Volodin wrote.

While the overwhelming majority of the country’s population spoke in favor of preserving the USSR in a March 1991 referendum, “people’s position was ignored,” he noted, citing the reason for this as “the weakness of politicians, the inability to unite political forces during a difficult time for the country.”

On December 8, 1991, the head of the Russian Soviet Republic Boris Yeltsin, the head of the Byelorussian SSR Stanislav Shushkevich and the head of the Ukrainian SSR Leonid Kravchuk signed the Belovezh Accords on establishing the CIS, which de facto seceded from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The country’s collapse resulted in numerous bloody conflicts, impoverishment of the vast majority of citizens, and a sharp decline in population in the 1990s.
