Turkish drone strike in Donbass dispels Moscow’s illusions. Opinion

29.10.2021, Ankara.

The Turkish drone strike in Donbass showed Moscow the illusory nature of its ideas about Turkey and the relations between the countries, an article published on the Azerbaijani news outlet Minval.az on October 28.

The article reads that Russia was confident that Turkey would not risk taking “anti-Moscow” steps on the political stage. The Azerbaijani portal notes that the Russian expert community gladly discussed the difficulties of relations between Turkey, the USA, France, and the EU. They were confident Turkey would soon leave NATO.

According to the authors of the article, Moscow knew about the deliveries of Turkish drones to Ukraine. But, as in the situation with Azerbaijan, Russia was sure that “the weapons are purchased solely for PR campaign [in Ukraine], but the curators will not allow to use it for military purposes.” The authors believe that Moscow miscalculated in this because weapons are not purchased by belligerent countries for parades and PR campaign – they are purchased for real war.

“And they sell them [weapons] too, knowing very well who they will be used against,” the article reads.

The authors noted that Turkey acts on the classic principle of “keep your friends close and your enemies even closer,” and understood perfectly well why it was so important for Russia to maintain control over Crimea – it is “the best position for a strike from the sea against Istanbul.”

“Turkey was well aware of which side of the front line in the Donbass Turkey’s interests were on,” the article reads.

According to the authors of the article, the demonstration strike of the Turkish drone against the servicemen of the Donbass republics destroyed not so much the weapon itself, as the political plans of Russia on the Black Sea direction, where NATO is now actively building up its military presence.

“So, the real consequences of the drone strike are yet to come. And Sivkov and Shurygin [Russia military experts] will definitely not talk about them,” the Azerbaijani portal promised.

On October 26, a video was released of a Ukrainian strike and reconnaissance drone of Turkish production Bayraktar TB2 near Granitnoye village striking the positions of the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics.
