Russian Foreign Minister: NATO makes attempts to escalate the situation in Asia

12.10.2021, Nur-Sultan.

NATO seeks to redirect its forces as well as the flow of Afghan refugees to Asia after withdrawing from Afghanistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting of foreign ministers of the countries participating in the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), the REGNUM news agency reported on October 12.

Lavrov has said that “we are observing purposeful attempts by NATO to escalate the situation and undermine the existing mechanisms of interstate cooperation.” He said that he is sure that the alliance is doing its best to avoid any responsibility for the consequences of its twenty-year experiments.

Meanwhile, the Minister believes that this problem should be solved by “the international community, first of all, the neighbors of Afghanistan.”

In August 2021, the Taliban (organization banned in Russia) seized power in Afghanistan as a result of a rapid offensive. At the same time the United States withdrew its troops from the republic. Thus, on the night of August 31, the nearly 20-year US military presence on Afghan territory came to an end.
